Why We Changed Our Packaging (And Why You’ll Love It)

At Furchild, we never stop listening, learning, and improving. That’s why we’ve upgraded our meal packaging to something that better serves you and your pets. It’s the same great recipe and taste, just in smarter packaging.

We took your feedback, combined it with industry innovation, and developed a packaging solution that offers superior food integrity, easier portion control, and meaningful sustainability benefits.

The Reason Behind the Redesign

While our previous vacuum-sealed pouches were already ahead of the pack, using less plastic and locking in nutrients effectively in comparison to conventional tubs and bags used in packaging frozen pet food, real feedback from our pet parents showed us we could do even better.

We didn’t just want better packaging; we wanted smarter packaging. That meant rethinking everything from backend operations to freezer-stacking ergonomics, while also maintaining food safety standards through our ISO 22000-certified supply chain.

After over a year of behind-the-scenes development and lots (and lots) of meetings and testing, we’re proud to introduce our new Furchild thermoform trays, a better solution designed to:

• Improve the opening and feeding experience with easier-to-use easy-peel tabs.
• Include perforations between pouches, no scissors needed!
• Offer smaller pre-portioned servings ideal for smaller pets and convenience.
• Provide leak-proof, perfect for storage and thawing.
• Extend shelf life and preserve nutrients with high-performance vacuum sealing.
• Include a QR code for easy access to full nutritional information.

What are thermoform trays?

They’re vacuum-formed, food-grade plastic trays commonly used in the human food industry for their superior oxygen barrier and moisture retention. They are the best packaging on the market for preserving vital nutrients in meats and fresh food. They also maintain cold chain integrity better than traditional bags or jars.

Our trays can be easily stacked in your freezer just like our old packaging. They are best stacked with one meal tray on top of the other, as shown below.

Whether you’re feeding a cat, a large dog, or anything in between, this change is all about making mealtime smoother.

Every pet parent has a unique feeding routine. That’s why we designed our trays in a range of sizes. Here’s how our new packaging compares to the previous:

If you have leftovers, it's not a problem. Our meals stay fresh in the fridge for up to 48 hours after defrosting.

Smarter Storage, Faster Thawing

All sizes of trays are stackable, clearly labeled, and designed to fit into standard freezers and most food containers. For the duration of thawing, if you previously used our large packs, the new trays are much quicker. All sizes of trays defrost within 12 to 24 hours.

Want to speed up thawing? Try one of our tips or tricks shared below.

• Place your unopened tray in a bowl of room-temperature water and check it every 10 minutes.
• Try transferring your tray from the freezer to the fridge the day before.
• Don’t stack multiple frozen meals (or other items) together.
• Try placing the tray in your fridge door or closer to the front (avoid the back since most fridges have a colder temperature at the back).

We Made This for You

This change wasn’t made lightly. It came from over a year of research and development, hundreds of customer insights (thank you to all the rawsome pet parents who completed our February 2024 survey!), and testing many types of packaging available on the market. We are fully committed to always doing better.
