Collagen is the most abundant protein in your pet's body, making up up to 30% of total protein and 70% to 80% of skin protein.

Also, collagen provides the structure necessary for tissues to maintain their integrity and flexibility, which is found in connective tissue throughout the body.

That said, Bark & Whiskers ™ Organic Collagen is unique for several reasons, including…

  • It is made with organic beef bone concentrate from grass-fed animals and not byproducts from the leather industry.
  • It is USDA certified organic so you know exactly what you are buying.
  • It underwent independent heavy metal analysis so you can rest assured that your pet will not be exposed to these dangerous contaminants.
  • It is not processed with metallic salts since it is a very lightly processed "complete" source of collagen.
  • It was made only for cats and dogs. So it does not contain additives, artificial flavours, added sugar, onion, spices, or MSG.
  • It has a delicious flavour, thanks to a pinch of Himalayan salt, which makes it an excellent option to increase your pet's fluid consumption.

FAQs

Proteins are the "building blocks of life" and form the basis for healthy muscles, bones, arteries, veins, skin, hair, tissues and organs.

For many years, the veterinary community believed that pets, especially cats, needed less protein as they aged.

But around 1990, Dr. Delmar Finco, a veterinary nutrition researcher, discovered that the need for protein increases with age. He found that a high-protein diet is associated with a longer lifespan, even in cats with kidney problems.

Many cats consume processed foods with difficult-to-digest ingredients, such as low-quality proteins, throughout their lives.

This type of low-quality diet can affect liver and kidney function, which could explain why so many cats have kidney problems. Contrary to what many believe, most older cats need more amounts of high-quality protein, not less.

With age, your pet's ability to use amino acids from protein deteriorates, making it more difficult to rebuild tissue. Senior cats and dogs need to consume plenty of high-quality protein to maintain muscle mass, promote joint and bone health, and support organ function and the immune system.

Unfortunately, most popular senior pet foods do not contain the high-quality protein they so desperately need. Almost all contain genetically modified grains, wheat or corn, as their second main ingredient.

These two ingredients are not suitable for pets, much less for elderly ones, since they replace the sources of high-quality animal proteins that cats and dogs need to maintain good health.

Additionally, they may contain glyphosate residues and aflatoxins, which are contaminants linked to cancer and chronic diseases.

And that's why Dr Karen Becker recommends giving your pets a high-quality, species-appropriate diet whenever possible.

Collagen represents 30% of the total protein in your pet's body, as well as 70% to 80% of the protein in its skin.

Collagen provides the structure necessary for tissues to maintain their integrity and flexibility, which is found in connective tissue throughout the body. That is, it is the "glue" that supports and holds everything together.

Collagen strengthens your pet's muscles, bones, tendons, ligaments, blood vessels, digestive tract and skin. It is essential for many biological functions...

  • Improves digestion by promoting acid production and helps capture and retain fluids, such as digestive juices, in your pet's intestine.
  • It helps restore and maintain intestinal health, which also strengthens immune system function.
  • Promotes normal detoxification processes by producing glycine, an amino acid precursor to glutathione.
  • Strengthens muscles and increases energy production during exercise by forming creatine and two other amino acids.
  • Strengthens DNA and RNA, the genetic components of healthy cells.
  • Maintains a normal and healthy inflammatory response.

Although collagen provides a variety of nutrients vital to your pet's well-being, their body's ability to produce it decreases with age.

The good news is that collagen can be replenished.

And the sooner you start giving your pets the components their bodies need, the more likely you are to help them maintain their mobility and comfort. As well as reap the other benefits of collagen. And thus you will begin to enjoy all the possible benefits of this wonderful compound.

Your pet's joints experience normal wear and tear as they age. Cartilage, or the natural cushioning of your pet's joints, also deteriorates with age.

Collagen makes up up to 90% of your pet's cartilage, bones, muscles, ligaments and tendons. Therefore, it's not surprising that joints can lose their stability and connective tissue and become more fragile when the body no longer produces as much collagen as before.

All of these age-related changes, which include producing less collagen, can affect your pet's comfort and flexibility, leading to increased susceptibility to injuries and bone and joint problems.

The collagen in beef bone concentrate supports your pet's joint and bone health in the following ways:

  • Serves as a cushion between bones to help your pet move smoothly
  • Helps maintain strong bones and healthy bone density
  • Provides amino acids that strengthen its structure and function
  • It is easily absorbed to support cartilage and bone health

That said, certain breeds have a greater predisposition to joint problems. For these pets, Dr Karen Becker recommends taking a proactive approach and starting a collagen supplement at a young age to help maintain healthy collagen levels.

Few things are as beneficial as slow-cooked bone broth made with bones and surrounding connective tissue from grass-fed animals. Perhaps for that reason, it has become a tradition that has been passed from one generation to another.

Organic Collagen Powder is unique for several reasons, including...

  • It's made with organic beef bone concentrate from grass-fed animals and not byproducts from the leather industry.
  • It's certified organic by the USDA, which guarantees a high-quality product.
  • It underwent independent heavy metal analysis so you can rest assured that your pet will not be exposed to these dangerous contaminants.
  • It's not processed with metallic salts, as it is a "complete" collagen source that is almost unprocessed.
  • It was made for cats and dogs only. So it does not contain additives, artificial flavours, added sugar, onion, spices, or MSG.
  • It has a delicious flavour, thanks to a pinch of Himalayan salt, which makes it an excellent option to increase your pet's fluid consumption.

The Bark & ??Whiskers™ Organic Collagen is the closest thing to slow-cooked beef bone broth but in a convenient, easy-to-prepare way. Just mix it with water and it's ready to serve.

More Info

Most bone broth and collagen products available do not come from organically raised animals, especially chicken bone broths. They typically come from animals raised on factory farms or concentrated animal feeding operations (CAFOs).

Animals in CAFOs typically receive genetically modified food, antibiotics, and growth hormones. The last thing you want is for your pet's food to have residue of these harmful additives.

The Consumer Wellness Center (CWC) analysed eight of the most popular non-organic collagen products sold online.

They found dangerous contaminants linked to CAFOs, suggesting that animal byproducts are used to make non-organic collagen products.

In addition to antibiotic and insecticide residues that are very common in the animal food supply, they also found these harmful contaminants in some of the products:

  • Butylparaben – an endocrine-disrupting chemical linked to low testosterone levels and abnormal sperm shape, size, and motility
  • Cyclandelate : a vasodilator medication
  • Netilmicin : an antibiotic

Factory-farmed animal products are harmful for many reasons. These include animal and environmental pollution and even antibiotic resistance.

Plus, bone broth products that come from conventionally raised birds pose a higher risk because the bones tend to accumulate toxins, which end up in the broth.

And collagen that comes from meat might be better.

There are two ways to obtain collagen from animals. From their skin and their bones.

Collagen is one of the most abundant byproducts of the leather industry.

Most collagen peptides or hydrolysed collagen on the market come from cow leather.

The problem with these types of products is the way the collagen is extracted from the skin. To produce this highly processed type of collagen, many tanneries use sulfuric acid and chromium salts during processing.

Animal-based collagen has a history of heavy metal contamination issues (that's one reason Dr Karen Becker never recommends rawhide for pets).

Instead of collagen from leather, she prefers collagen that comes from grass-fed and organically-raised bone broth... It's the most natural way to get collagen and, in her opinion, the best way to get all its benefits and avoid all the risks.

When bones and surrounding connective and joint tissues are simmered, they release collagen, minerals and other nutrients, without the contaminants typically found in CAFO animals or the collagen that is extracted from animal hides.

Beef bone broth is not like the bouillon cubes or canned broth sold at the grocery store. It has many nutrients but does not contain toxic additives.

And human products often include other ingredients, like onions, which are delicious, but not suitable for dogs and cats.

Bone broth is sometimes diluted and sugar and artificial flavours are added to improve its flavour.

Many companies use artificial meat flavours to create bouillon cubes and soup mixes. Gelatin may contain monosodium glutamate, or MSG, a flavour enhancer and known neurotoxin, which is not appropriate for pets.

Bone concentrate is easily digested and supports the gastrointestinal tract, providing much-needed nutrients to both healthy pets and pets with digestive issues.

The amino acids in collagen help keep the tissue that lines the colon and gastrointestinal tract in optimal condition.

The naturally occurring glycosaminoglycans (GAGs) in bone broth, also support digestive and intestinal health. Beef bone concentrate and collagen support intestinal and immune health by...

  • Strengthening the lining and permeability of the intestines.
  • Helping maintain a healthy microbiome.
  • Maintaining a healthy inflammatory response.

Since nearly 80% of your pet's immune system is located in their gut, supporting gastrointestinal health also helps maintain healthy immune function.

Also, bone broth is an excellent product for animals recovering from any type of severe gastrointestinal upset. If you notice that your pets are not eating like they used to, giving them a little bone broth could help them get the nutrients they need and support the health of their gastrointestinal tracts.
