What are you Feeding your Best Friend? A look into Raw, Organic Pet Food
In much the same way that producers of food for human consumption are in the business of making vast profits, so too are pet food producers. It is bad enough working out what we should be putting into our own mouths sometimes. Every day we are bombarded with conflicting reports from scientists and nutritionists, extolling or condemning particular dietary habits. Who can we trust for accurate, informed and impartial advice? Often, it’s all too much and we end up just doing what we have always done.
What, though, of our so-called best friends? The animals we provide sanctuary to – our pets. Have you stopped to consider just what it is you are serving up in their bowls every day? Most owners tend to find a brand their pets devour with gusto and stick with it. After all, they cannot communicate with us via normal methods, so if they eat it all up, it is best to not complicate matters by changing their diets, right?
I carried out a quick survey in a Dubai supermarket, in which I asked people in the pet food section whether they paid any attention to the ingredients contained within those cheerful bags and boxes of dried and processed...
Yes, your Doggie needs to go Raw too
Did you imagine organic meal plans are only for 'people'? Not really! The owners of the UAE's first raw pet food company talk about how the diet is doing wonders for pets across the country. For many pet parents in the UAE, the list of ailments that their beloved 'fur babies' suffer from seem only to compete with the number of trips they make to the vet every month. From skin irritations and hair loss to poor digestion, lack of appetite and lethargy, many will attest to how happy their dogs and cats are - "except" for the issue of their health.
For Dubai-based expats Robert Kelly and Katherine Cebrowski, this was their story too. The couple were thrilled to adopt their first English bulldog, Maximus, a few years ago, but soon found themselves spending 'mad money' on vet exams, antibiotics and commercial dog foods - all in desperate bids to find out why their pooch was constantly ill. As big believers in fitness themselves - Robert is former COO of Kcal, while Katherine used to be a yoga teacher - they were just as keen to ensure that their dog enjoy the best health too.
After much trial and error, the duo narrowed it down to one thing: poor nutrition. "Max was eating what was perceived to be the best pet food in the market at the time: a mix of...
Does your Pet Eat Healthy?
With made-to-order meal plans and organic, chemical-free biscuits, jerkies and chews - even custom-made birthday cakes - dogs and cats in the UAE can now enjoy invigorating diets.
Dubai: When Maximus was adopted by Canadian expat Katherine Cebrowski in 2013, it was a happy homecoming. But not long after, the English bulldog became lethargic and sick, his fur started falling out and his weight shot up. Trips to the vet cost money as they covered check-ups, skin treatments, eye drops, antibiotics and commercial foods. But nothing seemed to provide relief.
In 2015, another English Bulldog Simon, whom Cebrowski brought home, showed signs of poor nutrition. “His fur was dull, coarse, wiry and falling out. He was overweight, his breath was smelly, he had frequent gas and a build-up of tartar and plaque along his gums.”
Concern for Maximus’ well-being motivated his owners to research into the possible reasons behind his health problems. Cebrowski realised his diet was to blame and transitioned him to fresh, raw ingredients, following which his health dramatically improved.
Encouraged by a similar experience with Simon, Cebrowski and her South African partner Robert Kelly reached out to international pet nutritionists and learnt all they needed to know about raw meals. Keen to share the benefits with other pet lovers...

Money & Me: 'My most Cherished Purchase was my Dogs' Adoption Fee'
Robert Kelly is the founder and chief executive of Furchild, the UAE’s first fresh and organic pet food company, which he set up with his wife in November last year. Based in Al Quoz, Dubai, the company distributes to pet owners across the UAE with plans to expand into the GCC. South African Mr Kelly, previously held the role of chief operating officer at Kcal, after first moving to Dubai in 2008. The 34-year-old’s early career in Cape Town was in property development.
How did your upbringing shape your attitude towards money?
I’m the youngest of three boys by about eight years and fortunately we never had to go without as a family but at the same time we had to work for what we wanted. Having older brothers and a father that was quite business savvy – he spearheaded the Johnson & Johnson operation in South Africa for 35 years - set the bar very high. We were very competitive as a family, so a winning culture was nurtured in us from an early age. From that I had an inner belief in myself that I would be successful in business because I am so competitive. I did well in sports and given the boarding school we went to, academics was a very important part of it all too. Business for me is the ultimate competition and money is simply a by product of that success...
This is How to Give your Pet the Royal Treatment
Meet the owners of Furchild
Inspired to save their pup Maximus from a future on medication, Rob Kelly and Katherine Cebrowski threw all their time and effort into researching the ins and outs of pet nutrition. Following the launch of their raw meals, we speak with them to find out why pet nutrition is so important.
Why is a pet’s diet so important?
Katherine: It impacts all aspects of their life. To make sure you’re providing the best for your pet, it stems from their health and happiness; and health starts from nutrition. So the whole emphasis of giving them the food they’re supposed to eat that will make their health thrive, and become happier, is really what it comes down to.
What do most mass-produced pet food brands contain and what should a pet’s diet actually consist of?
Rob: The forefront of that is fresh food. These brands are highly processed and contain a lot of carbohydrates and starch, which essentially isn’t what an animal is adapted to eat. More to the point, they need to be eating a fresh food diet that’s species appropriate.
Katherine: A lot of what exists for pets today is by-products of human food, a lot of corn, wheat, soy, low-quality foods. If you look at animals, specifically dogs and cats, we look at their ancestral diet, and that’s what they’re designed to eat from evolution. If you can imagine what these animals ate in the wild, they were thriving off fresh, whole prey animals, fresh...
