How are Himalayan Dog Chews Made? | Ingredients and Making

How are Himalayan Dog Chews Made? | Ingredients and Making

Our Himalayan Chews come from an ancient recipe passed down over generations to become a popular food enjoyed by both, humans and dogs.

These high-quality organic chews for dogs are healthy, long-lasting, convenient to use, and irresistible to pets!

What are Himalayan Dog Chews Made of?

Our organic dog chews are made of hard cheese from Yak and Cow milk, which is a dog favourite. And the best thing about our long-lasting Himalayan Dog Chew and its making process is it's free from all kinds of chemicals, preservatives, and additives.

The lip-smacking cheesy flavour and the hard texture. That is what makes our organic dog chews long-lasting treats.

Only Four 100% Natural Ingredients

Yes, our Himalayan Chews are made using 4 high-quality ingredients only. And these organic dog chews are a high source of protein being made from Free-range Yak Milk, Free-range Cow Milk, Himalayan Salt, and Lime Juice.

What’s interesting is that the Himalayan Dog Chews' making process lasts almost four months. And each batch of Himalayan Chews produced through this process has 25 times the nutrition received from the same weight of milk.

Moreover, the slow production gives the chews their own unique combination of smoky and tangy flavours that are popular to make dogs’ tails wag with joy!

Ingredients of Himalayan Chews

How are Himalayan Dog Chews Made?

Our Organic Dog Chews are more than a tasty treat!

They are made using Traditional farming Methods and provide a livelihood to farmers in rural Nepalese communities.

The two main Himalayan Chews' ingredients, Yak and Cow milk are produced in the very high-altitude regions of Nepal, usually at or above 15,000 feet, which can’t all be consumed locally.

And due to the lack of modern storage technologies, the people who keep Yak and Cow herds use this ancient recipe with the intent to store this precious nutrient.

Himalayan Chews Stored

In the local language, it is referred to as a “Durkha” meaning Milk Cake, and it is also commonly called by its Tibetan name, “Chhurpi”.

The Himalayan Dog Chews' Making Process

The mixture of Yak and Cow milk is first boiled and then poured into a manual churning barrel that extracts most of the fat.

The curdled milk mixture is then poured into a sieve so that the solid material used to make the cheese can be separated from the whey.

After churning, most of the lactose from the milk is transferred into the whey. And the resulting cheese is left with little lactose.

The solid cheese is then transferred to burlap sacks where any remaining whey residue and water are drained.

The soft cheese is then kneaded until the substance is finely blended, then hand cut into desired pieces. Or put into moulds of different shapes and sizes.

The cheese is then dried to reach the desired hardness and texture. After which, a trace amount of lime juice diluted in water is used to clean the dried pieces.

Due to the handmade approach through every step of the process, it is very common for these Organic Dog Chews to have slightly different shapes and tints.

Supporting the Farmers who make Himalayan Chews

What further makes us proud is our Beyond Fairtrade policy which supports and enhances the livelihood of farmers and their families in the remote mountain regions of Nepal and the city of Kathmandu.

Harvesting Himalayan Yak Milk in the Himalayan Region

By purchasing directly from local businesses we help the farmers make extra money which in turn allows them to access services they otherwise could not afford.

Honouring Yaks and Cows

Yaks and Cows are considered to be sacred life-givers and are directly responsible for the improved economic situation of a Nepalese family.

And that’s why Yaks and Cows are treated very humanely. They’re raised traditionally in sheds.

No modern equipment or techniques are used in raising or milking the animals. They either graze on open grasslands or are offered fresh-cut grass. More importantly, the Yaks and Cows raised in this region have not been introduced to hormones, antibiotics, or other chemicals.

These practices align with our values. And at Furchild, we want the healthiest and tastiest options for our pets that support sustainability.

We are focused on building long-term relationships that contribute directly to the livelihood of communities while promoting optimal pet health and hours of chewing enjoyment.

And if that interests you, here are 10 Reasons Why Himalayan Chews are the Best Chew for Your Dog.
